Carers - In the workplace

Support in the workplace for carers

Managing caring and employment responsibilities can be challenging, but also very rewarding, with the right support in place.

Working carers may also have rights to:

  • request flexible working
  • time off in emergencies
  • protection against discrimination or harassment under the Equality Act 2010
  • a carer's assessment taking into account your wish to work, study or enjoy leisure activities (for information about Carers Assessments visit the York Carers Centre website)
  • Carers leave

You can get advice about employment and being a carer from the following organisations:

Jobcentre Plus

If you want to do paid work as well as caring, or find work when you stop being a carer, Jobcentre Plus can help with training and improving your skills, even if you don't claim benefits.

They can often help with costs while you’re training or going to interviews.

Support for employers of carers

  • 4.27 million carers are of working age
  • Research has shown that 1 in 5 give up work to care
  • This is costly to employers, in terms of recruitment expenses and losing skilled members of the workforce

Having a ‘carer friendly’ workplace for your employees can make a significant difference to retention and productivity, and help you get the best results for your organisation and staff.

For employers support please go to the employers for carers web page on the Carers UK website.
