Assessing and Adapting your Home

Assessing your home

City of York Council has developed a rating system for you use to check how suitable it may be as your needs change. This is based in an Age Friendly Ireland tool.

This simple checklist will:
• help homeowners, tenants, developers, and practitioners assess the suitability of housing for the needs of people who are frail disabled or with a long-term condition
• incorporate Building Regulation requirements and recommended universal design features, increasing the number of available properties and giving people real choice
• have adaptable elements to meet people’s changing needs as we age

This rating tool is applicable to all types of dwelling, such as houses, bungalows and flats in both rural and urban areas.

Adapting your Home

Eligibility

If you are a person with disabilities and want to adapt your home (to make it easier to live independently) you can arrange a free occupational therapy assessment via City of York Council’s Customer Access and Assessment Team.

Following your assessment, City of York Council Healthy and Sustainable Homes Services will determine whether the work you want to carry out is reasonable and practical. Based on the outcome, we may be able to help with the cost and installation.

Adaptations

The City of York Council website has information on adaptions:

  • Types of adaptations
  • Cost of adapting your home
  • Adaption grants
