We often hear from people with learning disabilities who want a job, but who need support to get one. Research has shown that people with learning disabilities regularly become very committed and reliable members of the workforce. WorkAid supports individuals with learning disabilities aged 16 and over across Sussex to gain voluntary and paid employment. It enables doorways to employment to open, making a difference to individuals, and their communities by improving attitudes, and approaches towards disability.

WorkAid's Employment Consultants meet individuals and working together with the candidate create and complete a personalised programme of work preparation, accredited training, job searching and vocational job coaching, until the candidate is able to work independently.

A key part of the success of WorkAid is working with a variety of partners including employers, community and agency organisations, local government, day centres and community teams. WorkAid has worked collaboratively with colleges across the county, to enable people with learning disabilities to move from the college environment, where they may have been repeating courses in some cases for many years, to the working environment. WorkAid provides the steps to employment, filling a skills gap that colleges can’t reach.

The team works across the county from offices in Worthing, Chichester and Burgess Hill. In 2014 WorkAid’s professionalism in providing Information, advice and guidance was acknowledged externally when they were assessed as meeting the Matrix Standard accreditation.
