Free Health Checks

City of York Council’s Public Health, YorWellbeing Team offers free Health Checks where you can:

  • learn about your risk of developing common but preventable health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease
  • understand how lifestyle can influence your risk
  • be supported to live a healthier lifestyle

Your health check will include an opportunity to discuss your current health and lifestyle factors. The following tests are available at your health check; they are all optional.

  • Blood pressure.
  • Cholesterol levels.
  • Blood glucose (if appropriate).
  • Height, weight and Body Mass Index

After the health check, you will be offered a personalised Health Check Report, giving lifestyle advice based on your results.

Stop Smoking Support

Stop Smoking – Support in York

The Council Public Health, YorWellbeing Team offers free support for all York residents to help them stop smoking.

  • You are 3 times more likely to quit with help and support
  • Someone who smokes 20 cigarettes a day can save over £2,500 per year if they stop smoking
  • Between 2 weeks to 3 months after you stop smoking, your heart attack risk will have started to drop and your lung function will begin to improve

The service provides courses that can support you to change your smoking behaviours, and advise you which medications to buy, if necessary.

12 weeks' free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is available for pregnant women.
