Covid-19 Supermarkets



       UK National Shielding Service Support (NSSS)

     The UK National Shielding Service (NSS) has been established by the government to deliver care to 2.2 million Extremely Clinically Vulnerable (ECV) people. This allows for those who are                 Extremely Clinically Vulnerable to get priority for supermarket deliveries. To apply for this support please visit the Government website.

     The supermarkets participating in the NSSS scheme are; Asda, Iceland, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose. 


Acomb & Foss Islands Supermarkets 

Doorstep delivery scheme- order over the phone and pay contactless when they arrive the next day. This service is available for those who are self isolating. It is very limited for those that really need it. You can find more details here

If you are self isolating, vulnerable or elderly please mention this when ordering. Your delivery driver will not ask you to sign for your items but will sign it on your behalf. They will do this after they have dropped off your deliveries on their electronic device as a proof of delivery.

For doorstep deliveries within 10 mile radius of stores - Ring 0345 6116111 and use option 5 Speak to staff, they will take your order and pay over the phone. There is no minimum spend. For any order placed before 5pm, they will try to ensure that it is delivered the next day.

There are Click and Collect bays available at both stores. Customers can order shopping online and drive to the Click and Collect bays and a member of a staff will bring your shopping to you.

There is an NHS Service Hour for NHS Staff, Blue Light Card Holders and School Staff for shopping from 6:00am-7:00am Monday- Saturday and 09:00am-09:30am on Sundays. For stores that open from 09:30am, the first hour will be reserved for these customers. All of these customers will need to show their identification when shopping during these times.

Morrisons are now offering those who have a Blue Light Card (those in emergency services, care workers and armed forces) a 10% discount on their shopping nationwide. This will stay in place until until 31 January 2021.

Deliveroo online shopping

This is available at both Morrisons supermarkets. There are over 70 essential items to order for on demand delivery, with a £4.99 delivery fee.  There is a minimum order value of £15. If you do not reach this amount you will be charged a small fee to take it up to this amount. If you are ordering alcohol Deliveroo request that you show ID to your delivery rider. You can only pay for your food delivery by card.

Amazon Prime

You can order your Morrisons shopping using Amazon Prime, if the order is over £40 and made before 5pm, you will receive free same day delivery.

You can also collect Amazon orders from Morrisons (both Acomb and Foss Islands stores), this will allow for you to pick up parcels whilst you shop instead of waiting at home. Once the parcel is delivered to the secure locker you will receive an email with a pick up code.


Askham Bar and Clifton Moor Tesco Extra Stores

If you are an elderly/ vulnerable customer and are struggling for a slot then you can ring 0800 917 7359 (dedicated delivery line) then you will be added to vulnerable list and delivery slots will appear for you to book a delivery. Unless you're self isolating the driver will be able to bring your shopping inside your house if you ask.

There is also shop and pay online as usual - it is the delivery slots only that are made available, however any family member, anywhere in country can arrange this. There is no facility to take orders over the phone.

Opening hours are Monday- Saturday 06:00am-12:00am and Sunday 10:00am-4pm. 

NHS, emergency service and care workers have priority access to both stores at any time.

A priority shopping hour has been introduced for elderly and vulnerable customers every Wednesday and Sunday 09:00am-10:00am. 

Tesco have also joined in, alongside other companies, with a national campaign Salute the NHS to provide food to frontline NHS workers.


Asda- Monks Cross and Layerthorpe Supermarkets

NSSS Recipients: Asda are accepting new referrals from the scheme. However, between 6 November and 23 December priority access is suspended and Clinical Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) customers will only be able to see and book the same slots as those non CEV customers.

The daily NSSS feed that Asda was receiving from central government was not received from 16-24 November, but this has now been switched back on and Asda will contact those customers who registered to inform them that a delivery pass has added to their account.

Asda are offering a click and collect service to customers to enable them to order online and then pick up their shopping at a time that suits them. The minimum spend which guarantees free next day collection is £25. All payment is contactless.

If you can physically visit the supermarket there is a priority shopping hour for NHS Workers, Care Home Workers and Carers between 8am-9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There is also an hour for browsing before stores open on Sundays.

Foss Bank Supermarket

NSSS Recipients:

Between 19-27 December 2020, inactive customers will have priority access temporarily suspended, meaning those priority access individuals will only be able to see and book the same slots as non priority access customers. If you're a priority customer who has been active with Sainsbury's (i.e. shopped with them in the last 12 weeks) you'll still have priority access during this period. Sainsbury's is closed from 24-26 December inclusive so no orders will be fulfilled for anyone during this time.

Vulnerable customers still have priority access to the home delivery service. If you do not have internet access and want to make a food order with Sainsbury's you can ring 0800 3281700 and place a telephone order for delivery. You may be in a telephone queue before you get the opportunity to place an order.

A Click and Collect service is also offered.

Opening hours for the supermarket are:

Monday-Saturday 08:00am-8:00pm

Sunday- 11:00am-5:00pm

For those who can visit the supermarket, please note that priority access is given to elderly and disabled customers between 8am-9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Priority access is also given to NHS and Social Care workers with a relevant pass between 7.30am-8.00am from Monday-Saturday.


Opening hours for Co-op shops have returned to normal opening times.

The Co-op provides instant shopping themselves and via Deliveroo. A delivery to another address in the city can be arranged, so a relative/friend or neighbour can place the order and arrange for it to be delivered to you.  You can track and keep up to date with your order. A minimum spend of £15 is required.

If you are an elderly or vulnerable shopper that needs help, you can ring the store direct and on an ad hoc basis staff will take the order and deliver local to the store you ring - you can either pay over phone or pay by cash. Here is a list of the local stores with contact details:

Fulford Road and Clifton Moor Supermarkets

Iceland provide delivery slots that are released 11am daily for next couple of days only to make it fair to all customers.

The delivery slots are from 6am - 11pm and are free with a spend over £35.  Shopping will be delivered within the 2 hour delivery time you select when ordering online. You can order up to 11pm the day before to qualify for free delivery.

There are also free same day instore deliveries offered if you live within a 5 mile distance of the supermarket and spend over £25.

There are four Spar owned shops in York; Clifton Green, Bad Bargain Lane, Escrick York Road and Huntington Road. The opening hours are listed below:

Clifton Green and Bad Bargain Lane shops are open from 7:00am-11:00pm and 7:00am-10:30pm on Sundays.

Escrick York Road: 6:30am-10pm

Huntington Road: 7.00am-9:00pm

To use internet shopping through Spar, please download and use their app Snappy Shopper. Once you have placed your order through the app, you can select a delivery time.


There are three Aldi supermarkets in York located at Fulford Lane, Water Lane and Kathryn Avenue. Aldi is offering a voucher scheme which allows volunteers/friends/family to shop on behalf of someone. The vouchers come in £5 or £10 at no additional cost. They can be used or posted to any UK address. They can only be used in store. Please visit the Aldi website or email

Aldi's delivery time frame for all deliveries is 3-5 working days. Where possible, Food Parcels will be delivered by the next working day on orders placed before 7pm on Monday- Friday. Please note that there may be a small delay in your delivery due to the impact on Covid-19. Please check your order tracking information for delivery updates. 

Aldi offer priority custom to key workers in the NHS, Police and Fire Service, Social Care Workers, First Responders and St John's Ambulance Staff upon showing a valid ID. In some Aldi stores there is now a traffic light system in place where priority custom will not be given and it will be based on 'one in and one out'.

This is in addition to early access on a Sunday, where key workers detailed above can enter stores 30 minutes prior to opening.

We also opening 30 minutes early Monday - Saturday for the Elderly (over 70) and vulnerable. Please note, in England and Wales, this is for browsing only. 


Lidl have two supermarkets in the city at Thanet Road and James Street

They have also introduced a traffic light system, which shows customers the busiest and lightest times to use their supermarkets. Opening hours for supermarkets can be found on the Lidl website.

The contactless payment amount limit in Lidl is £45. Shoppers are encouraged to pay safely using contactless, or card payments for transactions over £45.

Marks & Spencer

9 Pavement Store

Marks and Spencer (M&S) are now on Ocado. To order online,please visit the M&S at Ocado website.

It is £4.50 delivery with a £15 minimum spend. Maximum quantity restriction of 2 on every item.

For those customers who are vulnerable, older or self isolating there is the opportunity to purchase an All In This Together E-Card. This will provide a payment option without the use cash or card, and can be used by a family member or volunteer to pick up shopping for someone who is self isolating.

   Waitrose & Partners

     Waitrose have one supermarket in York at Foss Islands Road

     Waitrose & Partners is offering support to its elderly and vulnerable customers through a dedicated shopping hour during the first hour of the supermarket opening.

     (08:00-09:00 Monday-Saturday and 11:00-12:00 on Sunday).

     Opening hours are:

     Monday-Friday 8am-9pm

     Saturday 8am-8pm

     Sunday 11am-5pm

    They have prioritised at least 25% of their orders and delivery slots for vulnerable customers and those over the age of 70.

    They are continuing to contact customers on the lists of clinically  vulnerable people which the Government has shared with them.

    Waitrose are giving NHS staff and social care workers (carers) priority access to our shops and checkouts on production of suitable ID. This is to ensure they are able to get through as  quickly and easily as possible.

    Delivery slots are booked via the Waitrose website or on their App. Deliveries slot bookings cannot be arranged over the phone.

Food Boxes

National guidance has been released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) which details those supermarkets and wholesalers who are offering food boxes for delivery. The downloadable guide lists the current options given by national chains and wholesalers.

NHS Volunteer Responders can help those who need assistance with shopping and picking up essential items such as medicine.  You can find out more about the volunteers on their website here.
