Dial a Ride

Dial and Ride provides a door-to-door service, taking you from home to the city centre, supermarkets or local shops.

The buses are equipped for people who have difficulty walking and for wheelchair users.

For more information, see the Dial and Ride page on iTravel York or contact Dial and Ride on telephone: 01904 551441.

York Wheels

York Wheels is a voluntary sector service for people who find it difficult to use public transport in the York area.

Volunteer drivers, using their own cars, provide a transport service for a small charge. There are also two minibuses for hire by small groups.

York Wheels also operates the Dial and Ride service in partnership with City of York Council.

Approved Provider transport list

People who get a Transport Direct Payment are able to choose their support from a list of council-approved transport providers, or from other providers (not included on the list) if you wish.

If you do not receive a Direct Payment from the City of York Council you can still use the approved transport provider list knowing that the companies have been checked by the Council and will have accessible vehicle options.

Taxis

During the pandemic it is recommended that passengers wear face coverings within taxis whilst travelling.

Taxi firms may install protective barriers between passengers and drivers to prevent the spread of COVID 19. It is at the discretion of the driver (following a risk assessment) whether to admit a passenger without a face covering.

Not all taxi firms can take contactless payment, especially hackney carriages (immediate hire from taxi ranks). Passengers can check with with the private hire operator if the pre-booked taxi (private hire vehicle) can take contactless payment.

Some firms have their own downloadable apps and payment for journeys ordered online.

Further helpful information on taxis in York is located on the Information Pages on the City of York Council website.
