Help Around Your Home

Preventing Condensation, Damp and Mould

Everyday activities such as cooking, cleaning and bathing add moisture to the air inside our homes, which leads to condensation and the growth of mould.

Information from City of York Council on taking action to prevent condensation, damp and mould.

Goodgym York

GoodGym is a community of runners, walkers and cyclist working with community organisations, who combine getting fit with supporting older people (50+) and community projects. Requests for help have to come from a community organisation. They do not accept self-referrals.

They carry out practical tasks in the home or garden for older people who can no longer do such tasks for themselves.

Examples of tasks carried out by GoodGym York include:

  • changing light bulbs
  • moving heavy items of furniture
  • assembling flat-pack furniture

Any required tools must be available at the property. Your local community organisation can request practical support for an older person.

The Besom

The Besom is a charity which helps Christians and Churches give to those in need. The Besom in York is set up as a bridge between those who want to give and those who are in need. It is here to help people to show love in practical ways. They do this by helping those in the church to give their time, money, skills and things to those who are in need.

They have many groups of time givers who give their time to decorate, paint, clean, clear, garden and cook for those in need. These teams are from many churches and Christian groups in York.
