International Overdose Awareness Day

The world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died from overdose, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind is on Thursday, 31st August. 

Here’s what's happening in York around International Overdose Awareness Day:

Wednesday 23rd August Remember those lost – Wednesday 23rd August at 1pm, Rowntrees Park, meet by the café

Everyone welcome to remember people who have died through drugs and/or alcohol.

Thursday 31st August: Join the pop-up public living room hosted by York Nalaxone Knights, York in Recovery and Changing Lives in St Sampson Square – 31st August, 10am-4pm

Meet the teams, have a chat, learn about the lifesaving tool to reverse an opiate overdose, Nalaxone, which can give vital time until medical help arrives

Nalaxone training available and pick up a Nalaxone kit from the York Nalaxone Knights

Weather permitting, there will also be a remembrance tree to honour those lost; if it’s bad weather the tree will be hosted in reception at 3 Blossom St.


Plus free overdose awareness one-hour online sessions from 29th August – no need to book, just join via the link!

Learn all about drug overdoses. What are the risks? How can you stay safe? And what can friends, family, and professionals do to help? This session will provide some of the answers, as well as exploring why record numbers are dying from drugs in the UK today. Plus, join us on Thursday 31st August – National Overdose Awareness Day – for an extended session to hear Emma’s story of experiencing an overdose and her life being saved by Naloxone. Developed by experts at North Yorkshire Horizons and York Drug and Alcohol Service.
