Exciting New Community Art Project Set to Celebrate Walmgate

Last updated:

A brand new creative project is launching this month in Walmgate, aiming to bring residents, businesses, and artists together to celebrate the area’s rich history, diverse community, and creative energy.

Walmgate Re-framed, a six-month project running from July to December, is being delivered in partnership with the University of York and York Creatives. The project will see public spaces across Walmgate reimagined through art, storytelling, and creative collaboration — with plenty of opportunities for local people to get involved.

The project kicks off with a series of fun, inclusive creative sessions for residents of all ages. The first will take place at the upcoming Chat and Cake Event on the 11th and 12th of July, where the Walmgate Re-framed team will be running a drop-in art session. Everyone is invited to come along, get creative, and share their ideas for how to make Walmgate an even more vibrant and welcoming place.

In the lead-up to the event, local businesses are being encouraged to get involved by helping to design and display posters in their shop windows. These posters won’t just brighten up the streets — they’ll also be interactive. When scanned with a phone, the posters will reveal specially created digital artwork, offering a sneak peek of what’s to come as part of the project.

Digital art workshops will follow throughout the summer and autumn, with a particular focus on engaging younger residents — though everyone is welcome. These sessions will give locals the chance to learn new creative skills and help shape the final artistic outcomes of the project.

While plans are still being developed, organisers hope the project will culminate in a local art trail, showcasing both digital and physical artwork created by residents and local artists. Think posters, murals, and interactive installations that come to life with your phone — all leading up to a larger, final artwork designed by a community artist. Exactly what that final piece looks like will depend on the ideas and contributions of Walmgate residents and businesses.

Project Manager Sarah Williams, from York Creatives, will be visiting local businesses over the coming weeks to introduce the project and chat about how people can get involved.

“We’d love to hear from local businesses and residents,” said Sarah. “Whether you want to help design a poster, join a workshop, or just have a chat, please get in touch. Together, we can make Walmgate an even more creative, welcoming, and vibrant place to live, work, and visit.”

For more information or to get involved, keep an eye out for Sarah over the next couple of weeks — or join the Walmgate Re-framed team at the Chat and Cake event on July 11th and 12th.
