York Lindy is a welcoming, not-for-profit swing dance community, passionate about sharing the joy, energy, and history of jazz-era dances from the 1920s, '30s, and '40s. Whether you're a total beginner or an experienced dancer, we offer a range of classes, workshops, and social dance events to help you discover and enjoy Lindy Hop.
Our Thursday evening classes in central York are a great place to start—whether you want to drop in for a one-off taster or join a structured beginners' course. No previous experience or partner required.
We also run Saturday workshops, giving you the chance to dive into the basics in a fun and friendly environment. No partner or prior experience is needed - just bring your enthusiasm, and our experienced local teachers will get you dancing in no time!
As a community-focused organisation, all our profits are reinvested into York Lindy, helping us provide venues, workshops, live music, and guest teachers from further afield.
What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is an African-American partnered dance that emerged in Harlem, New York, during the swing era. It’s energetic, expressive, and deeply connected to the rhythms of jazz music—making it as much about creativity and connection as it is about movement.
