Clements Hall Local History Group

Our history group was founded in 2013, following a series of local history events at Clements Hall in York.
We're a group of people with wide-ranging interests in the local history of our neighbourhood - the Scarcroft, Clementhorpe, South Bank and Bishophill areas of York, to the south of the River Ouse. Our annual programme of talks is held in the Hall, although we have provided online talks during the pandemic. See the Clements Hall Local History Group website for details. We've also produced several books on the history of local shops and industries.
Our project on 19th century poverty in the Nunnery Lane area has just finished, see our reports on our website. We're about to publish a new book on the old shops and pubs of Bishophill. We're also researching and writing a history of Rowntree Park in support of the Rowntree Park Lodge Project. In 2023 we launched a family archives project, supporting members in developing their own family history archives. Lastly, following a successful talk in September, we’re mapping the location of scoria bricks in the back lanes of York.
Visit the Clements Hall History Group website to find out what we're up to.
