Campaign Agaist Living Miserably (CALM)
Description
Standing together, united against suicide
We’re the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and we’re taking a stand against suicide. That means standing against feeling shit, standing up to stereotypes, and standing together to show life is always worth living.
125 lives are lost every week to suicide. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. We exist to change this.
We do it by provoking conversation, running life-saving services, and bringing people together so they reject living miserably, get help when they need it and don’t die by suicide.
But we can’t do it alone. Stand with us.
WHAT WE DO
Frontline services
Anyone can hit crisis point. We run a free and confidential helpline and webchat – open from 5pm to midnight every day, for anyone who needs to talk about life’s problems. We support those bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP).
Communities
Together we’ll help our parents, siblings, partners, friends and colleagues. We spread our message and facilitate, universities, pubs, clubs and prisons across the country – so that people feel empowered to share their experiences and get the help they need before they reach the point of crisis.
Campaigns
Everyone has a part to play. We campaign with media partners, brands and ambassadors to spread awareness of suicide and its devastating impact with campaigns like #Project84, #DontBottleItUp and The Best Man Project. We challenge boring male stereotypes and encourage positive behavioural change and help-seeking behaviour, using cultural touch points like art, music, sport and comedy.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
We stand together with everyone who’s struggling with life, no matter who they are, where they’re from or what they’re going through. And we do it through our life-saving services, national campaigns, and by building communities.
We stand together with those struggling
Anyone can feel suicidal. So we need to be there for everyone. From advice on our website about issues you might be facing; through to free, confidential chats with our helpline staff, online or on the phone, we’re here for anyone who’s struggling, every single day of the year. No matter what.
Our helpline and webchat are open 365 days a year, offering practical suggestions for all of life’s problems – whether that’s anxiety, relationship concerns, health worries, money worries or suicidal thoughts. Our staff answer a call every 66 seconds – they listen, talk and help people struggling with life to make a plan so they can begin to look to the future.
We also know losing someone to suicide is different to any other kind of bereavement, so we’re there to support those bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP).
We stand up to stereotypes and change the conversation through our campaigns
Through our campaigns we challenge stereotypes and challenge the stigma that prevents people talking about suicide. And we use music, sport, art and anything in between to get our message across and to help people find the strength to seek help.
From Project 84 to The Invisible Opponent, our campaigns create real impact, get people talking and, crucially, change the conversation. Working with some of the biggest organisations in the UK we’ve achieved amazing things, including the appointment of the world’s first ever minister for suicide prevention. And we have even bigger plans for the future.
We stand united with communities
We’re uniting the UK against suicide. We spread our message by being in universities, pubs, clubs, football stadiums, and prisons across the country – so that people feel empowered to share their experiences and get the help they need before they reach the point of crisis
And the people in Clubs run, cycle, bake, laugh, cry, share, campaign, represent, shout, volunteer, play, paint, question, fight, raise money… doing anything and everything they can against living miserably. Because we know that suicide is preventable, not inevitable – that there is always hope, always a reason for living.
Thousands of people have already taken a stand with us. Join us and together we can save lives and change society.
