Description

York Neighbours aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation by offering help to people aged 65+ wishing to stay independent in their own home.

Our volunteers offer help with small one-off jobs around the house, changing a light bulb, taking down curtains for washing, small DIY jobs and repairs. We offer calls to people who are isolated or lonely. We organise occasional outings.

What we do

1) Help with practical one-off jobs.

As people get older, or perhaps due to temporary illness or injury, some jobs around the home become almost  impossible. For example, changing a lightbulb, taking curtains down to clean and putting them back.

We offer to shop for people in times of injury or illness or on a one-off basis, or go with them, for example, to buy an important present or to replace a broken household item. If your request can be met by another service in the community we will let you know – the aim of York Neighbours is to bridge gaps in existing services, not to duplicate those already available.

2) A regular phone call

If someone does not have family or friends nearby we can arrange for a volunteer to ring for a chat and to ask how they are.

Some people may request this only during times of illness, severe weather, or when family, friends or neighbours are going to be away.

3) Individual and group outings

Occasional trips are organised to the garden centre, cafe, or other places of interest.

Cost

There is no charge for one-off practical jobs (apart from any materials purchased which will be discussed in advance).

The York Neighbours office is open from 9:30am-3:30pm Monday to Friday.
