Dealing with Seasonal Changes

Summer Health

While many people enjoy warmer summer weather, hot weather can cause some people to become unwell through overheating (becoming uncomfortably hot), dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

There are several actions you can take to stay safe in hot weather. The NHS website has information on How to Cope in Hot Weather. The government has also produced guidance about coping with heat, called Beat the Heat  and a keep cool at home checklist . It includes tips on how to keep yourself and others safe from harm during hot weather, how to keep your house cool and what signs to look out for in heat related illnesses.

For more detailed information on keeping cool have a look at Beat the Heat: Staying safe in Hot Weather on the government website.

Winter Health

It's important to look after yourself, especially during the winter. If you start to feel unwell, even if it's a cough or a cold, don't wait until it gets more serious. Seek advice from your pharmacist.

There is a directory of services for the public over winder. This provides information about the range of services available to help you stay healthy and well in your community during the winter months. It includes resources to support your physical and mental well-being, ensuring you have access to the assistance you need when it matters most.

Information on dealing with cold weather can be found on the NHS: Seasonal vaccinations and winter health page

The City of York Council Winter Health page also provides a range of useful tips and navigation to health videos on various winter related treatments.

The Healthwatch York's Winter newsletter, focuses on winter health issues and shares advice and resources to help individuals stay well.

For information specifically for older people there is the Age UK - Keep Well At Winter page. Age UK, with the NHS and government have also produced this leaflet: Top tips for keeping warm and well this winter.

And this government poster has advice on how to: plan ahead; keep yourself warm; prepare your home and look after yourself and others.

You may be able to claim financial and practical help with heating your home. Grants available include the Winter Fuel Payment and the Cold Weather Payment.
